Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will compete in an unusual competition at the Open of Australia 2027. The two world tennis stars confirmed their presence at AO 1 Point Slam.
The concept totally contrasts with classic tournaments. Professionals, amateurs and guests compete in a direct elimination table where only one point is enough to win or be eliminated. Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka will also be on the side.
One million dollars on one point
The principle is simple as it is spectacular. Before each duel, a game of «stone-sheet-scissorsdetermines the player who serves or receives. Then, the two opponents fight one point. The winner continues the adventure, while the loser immediately leaves the competition.
The stakes are huge. The 1 Point Slam champion will leave with $1 million. The final is scheduled on 13 January 2027 at the Rod Laver Arena, a few days before the beginning of the main painting of the Open of Australia, scheduled from 17 to 31 January.
Sinner already knows that everything can swing
Jannik Sinner is particularly familiar with the dangers of this format. At the 2026 edition, Australian amateur Jordan Smith had eliminated him before continuing his career to the title and to the million dollars. He also beat Amanda Anisimova before dominates Taiwanese professional Joanna Garland in the final.
For the 2027 edition, Alcaraz, Sinner, Gauff and Osaka will have to deal with a radical rule: their status as stars will not give them any right to error. Only one point could cost them a million dollars.
